New Year, New Ani”me”

I will continue to be a problem, I cannot escape it

It’s a strange thing to make your hobby or interest a “New Year’s Resolution” and, as weird as it is to do so, I think it’s as equally weird to have a New Year’s resolution. You should always try to improve yourself, right? The New Year doesn’t mean anything because you’re just as likely to be the same difficult person that you were in the previous year or at least I will more than likely be. I’m only typing this up to say that my goal for myself this year is to watch more anime with more regularity. It’s not a bold and awe inspiring goal like losing weight or quitting some self damaging vice but it’s the only thing I thought “hey that’s something I should improve myself on”. As you can infer from that “resolution”, I’m not exactly filled with grand ambition.

According to the MyAnimeList tracking website, AnimePlus, I added 46 completed MAL entries to my list this year. Now while that reads like a pretty solid number (and truthfully the number of anime that you watch is meaningless compared to how much you enjoy the shows you watch), that’s including one off specials, three episode mini series, and movies. Only around 30 of them were actually anime series that had 10+ episodes which is kind of a shock for me personally as someone who consumed with raw avarice in the past. It’s not as bad as my 2023 where I went half the year without watching ANYTHING but it’s kind of a mild downer compared to how I used to be when I would consist on anime week to week just a few years ago. It’s not like I watched anything at an increased speed during that time either. I take my anime raw and sometimes at a drag the way Haruhi above intended me to.

This is all to say that I want to watch more anime this year because I love anime and I want to further rejuvenate my love for it even more with this year of 2025. I want to sample more of the sweet honey that made 2024 a great year for anime and have more discourse with all the people out there.

Since I didn’t get around to engaging very much with 2024’s selection of seasonals barring the ones that manifested extraordinary hype in me like Dandadan, A Sign of Affection, and Oshi no Ko’s second season, I’m going to try to take the month of January to give the best of 2024 a chance. As such, I’m assembling a crack team of shows that I plan to watch this very month and they are as follows:

  • Solo Leveling
  • Kaiju No. 8
  • The Fable
  • Girls Band Cry
  • The Dangers in My Heart Season 2
  • The Elusive Samurai
  • Wind Breaker
  • Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Part 2

This isn’t even a comprehensive list as there are plenty more shows that I’ve got on my 2024 PTW; these are just the entries that are more prolific. I know I missed a lot here but it’s the stuff I saw when they were airing and went “ooooooooo I wanna watch that” and then proceeded to do exactly NOT that.

I’m no longer doing a podcast where we enforce strict seasonal impression and review content so I’m not diving headfirst into seasonal content because I don’t have to and that’s probably a reason why I’m not diving so deep in the seasonal pools but honestly it’s for the best. On my old podcast, Otaku Melancholy, it wouldn’t be uncommon for me to watch shows just to watch them and loathe the very act of sitting down to watch anime such as Redo of Healer. That’s the kind of anime that does psychic damage to your mind in a way that makes you forget who you are.

So with 2025 here, I just want to be more focused on my anime hobby than I was the previous year. I love a solid video game experience and a good book with a fervent passion but anime was the thing that got me through some of the more difficult nights when I was a kid because my parents weren’t always willing to buy games or books but cable was something THEY needed.. Waiting up for the new InuYasha made all the week’s heartache and difficulties fade into the past and I’ll always be thankful to anime for that which is why I want it all the more this year.

If you have some shows from 2024 that you recommend then please comment them and I’ll hopefully get around to them! Hell, if you just have a show that you love and that you think I haven’t seen then comment that too so I can check it out! Thank you again for reading my blog and if you want more of my ramblings then feel free to check out the latest episode of the Anime Brothers Podcast which I’m a host on. It means a lot that you read this and I’m very thankful for you giving me your time! Have a happy new year!

  1. I feel you on the wanting to watch more anime series. For a while now I’ve pretty much only been watching One Piece (on episode 831 atm) and the other shows I wanna watch have been suffering for it.

Happy to throw a few recommendations your way:

    Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy

Season 2 came out in 2024, so I’m counting it. This is probably my favorite Isekai that I’ve seen. I’ve seen people compare it to Reincarnated as a Slime, and I definitely see it. Personally though, I found Tsukimichi to be far more enjoyable than the season of Slime that I watched.

    Ragna Crimson

If you want an insane plotline/world with edginess and blood by the gallons. The world is by far the most interesting part of it for me.

Banished From the Heroes Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside

Despite the name, it’s not an Isekai. If you want a mostly laid back and pleasant romance about a dude trying to live the simple life this is a good option. Not to say that all it has going for it is the romance.

    Buddy Daddies

    The better Spy X Family.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic

Yes it’s an isekai, but I really enjoyed it.

    A Couple of Cuckoos

Where to start with this one. If you like raging dumpster fires levels of trash and can wait for that fire to catch then here ya go. The first chunk of this show was quite possibly some of the most boring anime I’ve seen to date. However, there is a point where the other shoe drops and from then on I’ve been invested in this burning trainwreck into a landfill of a show. Season 2 is apparently supposed to come out sometime this year. If it goes the way that it could it might surpass Rent a Girlfriend in trashiness.

    Hell’s Paradise

I know you’re generally not a big shonen fan, but considering how much you like JJK I think this might be up your alley.

    Cells At Work!

Fantastic show that will teach you about the inner workings of the human body while keeping you entertained.

Also wanted to throw in my 2 cents on some of the shows you already plan to watch:

Solo Leveling – It’s pretty. That’s about all I got on it. The op is good.

Kaiju No. 8 – Really solid show imo. Definitely has potential.

The Elusive Samurai – Not gonna lie, this one missed for me.

Let me know what you think if you watch any of these!

    1. I feel like I’ve been in a similar space when I have been watching anime myself. When I do have my anime time then I’m compelled to knock out a few more episodes of Hunter x Hunter for the AniBros or bang out some of InuYasha with my girlfriend.

      Thank you for the recommendations! I’ve got a couple of these on my PTW but the added recommendation from you is going to make them a higher priority to get around to like Buddy Daddies. I just know I’ll love that show. Daddy-daughter or son/found family anime always hit with me. Even Usagi Drop is a CERTIFIED ANIME BANGER as long as I pretend the manga ending doesn’t exist. ^^;;

To be fair, I only want to watch Solo Leveling because I continuously run into discourse about it. I read the first novel and was absolutely struggling to care because of the sheer raw power fantasy it wanted to be.

I understand the struggle of trying to watch more in 2025. I’ve also fallen behind on watching shows because I start too many and never finish them. So, for 2025, I’ve set aside a day for seasonal shows and picked five to watch for now (Seasonal Thursday). This way, I can be committed to a few shows and enjoy them instead of constantly starting new ones just because I heard they’re good.

    1. That is a really solid idea! I think I’ll try to employ it myself because there’s actually a bit coming out this season in particular that I want to watch. I get what you mean though; it feels like I have started so many just to fall off by episode four and never think about again.
